The United Kingdom remains one of the most sought-after study destinations in the world, home to institutions like Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, and dozens of other globally ranked universities. If you are an Indian student planning to study in the UK in 2026, understanding the Student visa is the most critical part of your preparation.

This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know — from eligibility and required documents to financial proof, the CAS letter, and tips for a successful visa application.

What is the UK Student Visa?

The UK Student visa allows international students to study at a licensed UK education provider. It is issued for the duration of your course plus an additional period (typically 4 months) for courses of more than 12 months.

    Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a UK Student visa in 2026, you must meet the following criteria. You must have an unconditional offer from a UK Higher Education Provider that is a licensed Sponsor. You must have a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number assigned to you by your university. You must demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency (IELTS Academic 5.5–6.5 depending on your course level). You must show adequate financial means to cover tuition fees and living costs. You must be aged 16 or over.

The CAS Letter — What It Is and Why It Matters

The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is a unique 14-character reference number issued by your UK university. Universities typically issue the CAS 6–8 weeks before your course start date. You cannot apply for your Student visa until you receive your CAS number. Make sure all information in your CAS is correct — including your name, passport number, and course details.

    Required Documents

Mandatory Documents: Valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your planned stay. CAS reference number. Proof of English proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL/PTE certificate). Financial evidence (bank statements for the past 28 days). Tuberculosis (TB) test results (required for Indian nationals).

Supporting Documents: Academic transcripts and degree certificates. University offer letter. ATAS certificate if your course requires it. Evidence of previous UK visas (if applicable).

    Financial Requirements

You must show tuition fees for Year 1 of your course plus GBP 1,334 per month for living costs if you are studying in London, or GBP 1,023 per month outside London, for up to 9 months. These funds must have been in your bank account for at least 28 consecutive days before the date of your visa application.

The 28-day rule is one of the most commonly misunderstood requirements — your funds must be held continuously for 28 days, not just present on the day of application.

    English Language Requirement

For undergraduate courses, most UK universities require a minimum IELTS Academic score of 6.0–6.5 overall. For postgraduate programs, the requirement is typically 6.5–7.0. Some universities accept TOEFL iBT or Pearson PTE Academic as alternatives.

    Tuberculosis (TB) Test

Indian nationals must undergo a TB test from an approved clinic before applying for a UK Student visa for a course longer than 6 months. Results are typically valid for 6 months. The test costs approximately INR 3,000–5,000 and results are ready within 1–2 days.

    How to Apply

Step 1: Receive your unconditional offer and CAS from your university. Step 2: Gather all required documents. Step 3: Complete the online Student visa application on the UK government website. Step 4: Pay the visa fee (currently GBP 490) and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). Step 5: Book and attend a biometric appointment at a VFS Global centre in India. Step 6: Submit your documents. Step 7: Wait for a decision — typically 3 weeks from the date of your appointment.

Processing Time and When to Apply

UK Student visa decisions typically take up to 3 weeks. You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts. We recommend applying at least 6–8 weeks before your intended travel date. Avoid applying during peak periods (June–August) when processing centres are busiest.

    Tips for a Successful Application

Ensure every detail in your application matches your passport exactly. Maintain your bank balance above the required threshold for the full 28 days before applying. If your documents are not in English, have them officially translated. Write a clear and honest personal statement that explains your study plans and your future career in India.
